THE SPRING MELT

The heavily laden

Mountain slopes

Slowly shed their winter coat

Beginning the slow spring melt

The snow and ice

Releasing the water

Imprisoned within it

Metamorphosing as it seeps

Into every crevice

Rivulets gently trickling

Into dormant streams

Gaining volume and momentum

As it tumbles downward

Swelling and growing

Feeding cascading waterfalls

And white-water rapids

As it races to the valleys below

IN MY BACK GARDEN DURING LAST WINTER

In my back garden during last Winter

I saw the strangest of things

The fattest Robin I’ve ever seen

It was like a cricket ball with wings

NEVER EVER CATCH A SNOWFLAKE

Never ever catch a snowflake

In your mouth

Until you’re sure all the birds

Have flown south

TWO SNOWMEN WERE STOOD IN A FIELD

Two snowmen were stood in a field

In one of those cold exposed spots

When one turned to the other and said,

Am I the only one who can smell Carrots?

A SNOWMANS TALE

When I was very little

My dad and his brother

Built a huge snowman

Bigger than any other

He was as tall as Dad

And was round and fat

It had coal for eyes

And a big black hat

A scarf about its neck

For sartorial style

A large carrot nose

And a twig for a smile

Knobbly stick arms

With gloves at the end

A belt around its girth

Like a cummerbund

I loved that snowman

Standing so very tall

Until the eventual thaw

And I watched him fall

THE CHILL WIND

The chill wind

Bitter and biting

Buffeted the house

Rattling the windows

And whistling at the door

Exploiting every weakness

Exposing every crack

To chill us to our bones

SNOWDROPS IN WINTER

Snowdrops in winter

Mother nature’s heralds

Of the coming spring

MOONLIGHT GLINTS

Moonlight glints

On the silent vales

Dressed crisply

In winters cloak

Lying like rippled silk

On the frozen land

THE WIND WHISTLES

The wind whistles

The frozen rain bites

And the chill runs deep

And we must escape

To shelter safe inside

Where the Barn Owls sleep

THE SAVAGE NATURAL SCENE

The savage natural scene

In the winter meadow

Where the Falcon feeds

His talons red in the snow

WINTER DELIGHT

Building snowmen

Having snowball fights

Rejoicing in mischief

Is the winter delight

WINTER HAS COME

Winter has come

The land has gone

A white shroud

Covers the lifeless form

MARBLED SKIES

Marbled skies of broken cloud

Coloured with blues and greys

In the frosty air of winters bite

The marbled skies of winter days

NICE

Making your way in life, it’s nice

To know you can, once or twice

Rely on other people in a trice

For assistance, guidance or advice

They’ll be no shortage of advice

But knowing what piece or slice

Of advice or guidance will suffice

You might just as well roll a dice

This axiom though it be concise

Won’t be bettered to be precise

So, you take heed or pay the price

“Don’t eat yellow snow or ice”

WINTER HELL

The lake is frozen,

Nothing lives

In this frozen hell

Even the sky is desolate

Save for the crescent moon

Standing sentinel

Saturday 13 February 2021

THE FIRST FLURRIES

The first flurries of the white,

Began to fall at twilight

Though until the dawn

So, by the next morn

Everything lay below

A carpet of fresh white snow

WINTERS GRIP

The snow has settled on us

Like a shroud.

Each day growing deeper

Silence fills the emptiness of the landscape

But for the ghostly sound of the wind

High in the treetops

The meadows and fields have vanished

The river flows mute beneath the ice

The next valley is unreachable

The mountains as unattainable as the Moon

But soon spring will release the land

From its icy captor

And the winter we be no more

Then remembered conversations

Beside the roaring hearth

CLOAK OF FOG

A thick winter cloak of fog

Settles deep into the valley

Making everywhere anonymous

Obscuring every lane and ally

And for those poor souls abroad

Found it was not a night to dally

ARE YOU WEARING WINTER UNDERWEAR?

Are you wearing winter underwear?

I’m thinking as you stand there

Are you clad in body formers?

Proper cosy winter warmers

Substantial Bloomers for outdoors

A sturdy pair of winter drawers

I may never know for sure

But with my thoughts impure

I’m content as you stand there

In your cosy winter underwear

WINTER WARMER

The Snow lies on the Earth

Icicles hang from the gate

Frost sits on the windowpanes

A fire burns in the grate

The sun sets beyond the wood

Abandoning the sky

Let’s draw the curtains in

And bank the fire high

Now turn the lamplight up

And forget about the weather

Warm moment we’ll share

As we cosy up together

DECEMBER, DECEMBER

December, December

The snow has come

Falling all night long

Kids it’s time to have some fun

December, December

Children playing in the snow

Skating and sledding

Faces all aglow

December, December

More snow will come

Then all through the winter

Kids will have more fun

FATHER FROST

Father Frost, with icy fingers

Holds winter in his frozen grasp

And spreads it wide across the land

Till it wears his thick winter cloak

Sunday 7 February 2021

SOFT BLANKET OF WHITE

A silent soft blanket of white

Had hidden the land from sight

It’s our job to investigate the crime

Really, we want to have a good time

We sledge and we toboggan

Build the world’s biggest snowman

We have a massive snowball fight

Doing battle till the enemy took flight

Then we stomp thru the powdery crunch

Making our way home to have lunch

WHITE BERRIES

White berries grow

In abundance

On the mistletoe

As the snow falls

Nature’s bounty

On the bough

Mother Nature

Stocking her Larder

For the long bitter

Winter to come

Friday 5 February 2021

ARE YOU WEARING SENSIBLE SHOES?

Are you wearing sensible shoes?

And substantial winter tights

What a wonderful combination

I can’t express how that delights

How comfortably cosy you will be

On the long cold winter nights

RED BREASTED ROBIN

Red Breasted Robin

Sitting on the fence

With snow falling

God that bird is dense

Sitting out there exposed

Out in all weathers

Trying to look cute

As it freezes its feathers

Thursday 4 February 2021

BUT SOFTLY THE MYRIAD SNOW FLAKES FALL

But softly the myriad snowflakes fall

These infinite flakes of purest white

Like pure white down of angel’s wings

Floating gently from heavens height

But this is no heaven-sent delight

This thing of beauty that cruelly lingers

For harshly touched is the naked earth

When touched by winters icy fingers

OH DREARY WINTER

Oh, dreary winter

You have overstayed

Your grey skies

Are not welcome

I know spring is close

I look at the grey lake

With the duck on it

The only splash of colour

In the late winter landscape

But I see the hints of spring

Everywhere around me

And the promise of daffodils

Lilacs and butterflies

So, winter it’s time to go

Your welcome is worn out

Wednesday 3 February 2021

ARE YOU WEARING WOOLLY TIGHTS?

Are you wearing woolly tights?

That’s one of my favourite sights

As the evenings begin to shorten

Well as they say winter draws on

LITTLE ROBIN REDBREAST

“Little Robin redbreast

Where can you be?

Dear little Robin

Come and say hello to me”

“I can’t “says the Robin

“The winter is preventing me”

“Little Robin redbreast

Where can you be?

Dear little Robin

Come and say hello to me”

“I can’t say hello to you

Because I’m frozen to this tree”

THE SEASONS COME AND GO - WINTER

The seasons come and go

Almost monotonous I know

One after another, as planned

Like the sweep of a clock hand

Each season reminding us all

That from winter to the fall

Is yet another year slipped by

A step closer to when we die

A depressing thought I know

But let the seasons come and go

For I think it would be a crime

If there was to be no wintertime

WHEN WINTER COMES

When winter comes

And the first snowflakes fall

Who is the first one in my thoughts?

Who is the first person I call

When winter comes

And there is a fresh fall of snow

Who makes snow angels with you?

Is it that you’re the best angel maker I know?

When winter comes

And there’s fresh snow on the ground

Who builds the snowman with you?

Is it that you make the best snowmen around?

When winter comes

And we spend all of our time together

Have you ever wondered why?

Do you think that I just like the snowy weather?

When winter comes

There is a reason why every winter I call you

It’s the same reason I’ve had since we were seven

I’ve wanted to tell you but have been to scared to

When winter comes

The reason I pull off your wet gloves?

And the reason I gently warm your cold hands?

Is that you’re the one I love

BATHED IN SUMMER SUNSHINE

Bathed in summer sunshine Gentle breezes stir the stems But above in the golden sun Grow an array of perfect gems
