REBORN

Mountain snows thawing

Swollen rivers causing

Nature dormant awakening

New life into breathing

Sprouting shoots arriving

Early cherry blossoming

Annual event occurring

Life’s cycle repeating

Springtime refreshing

Simple senses pleasing

Gods design believing

WINTER HAIKU # 1

A hushed silence

Had descended on the landscape

With the gentle snowfall

Sunday 20 December 2020

FROM THE ICY SUMMIT

From the icy summit

Of the mountain high

It begins to trickle,

Toward its destiny,

Trickle becomes rivulet

Rivulet into stream

Gathering momentum

Descending quickly

Its method brilliant

In its simplicity

Following the path

Of least resistance

On its purposeful descent

Growing ever stronger

In the great race

To its destination

Influenced by gravity

As it powers on

Ever deeper, ever wider

Ever more rapidly

To form great rivers

Heading for their destiny

Which is fulfilled

When reaching the open sea

SCENE THROUGH FROSTED GLASS

 In the sheltered winter lowlands

Every inch and acre

Are dusted white, almost as if

Sugared by a cake decorator

WHITE VALLEY

Viewed through frosted panes

The valley was bathed in moonlight

And like a ribbon of pure white silk

The road crossed the silent scene

SKELETAL TREES STRIPPED BARE

Skeletal trees stripped bare

Dressed now in ice and frost

As they shiver in the wind

Longing for the summer lost

IN THE GLOW OF FIRELIGHT

In the glow of firelight

I admire the stark beauty

Of the winter landscape

Beyond the frosty panes

Safe by the cosy fireside

WINTER

Standing in the hushed silence

Breath pluming in the frost filled air

Beneath the deep velvet blue of the night sky

Broken only by the myriad of glistening stars

My futile thoughts are lost in its enormity

I’m suddenly startled by my own insignificance

I feel alone, hopeless, and helpless

A bitter chill touches my bones

I walk on over the linen shrouded land

Footsteps treading crisply in the white

My breath still plumes though less so

The velvet curtain of night has gone

Hidden behind grey, brown clouds

Then the cold frosty night was no more

As the wind freshens against my cheek

And in that instant fresh snow falls

Seemingly silencing my footfalls

Large soft flakes drifting haphazardly

Like confetti on a wedding day

Or cherry blossom in springtime

It fell faster, then faster still

Quickly obscuring my footprints

And blinding my view, disorienting

A bitter chill again touched my bones

The wind now stung my face with snow

As the blizzard of bridle white blew

I bent into the northerly gale

Head down eyes narrowed almost closed

I stopped briefly to catch my breath

Insignificance washed over me again

I knew I must go north into the mouth of it

The silent hush was no more as the blizzard blew

My feet no longer crunched on frost and ice

The deepening snow slowing my progress

Each step I must drag my feet from the snows grip

With each step I grow wearier

Feeling hopeless and helpless

Alone, insignificant, and small,

Smaller than a single snowflake

Smaller than the snowflakes around me

A bitter chill again touched my bones

Then suddenly I am again filled with hope

As I pass between the old wrought iron gates

Into the city street beyond and home

FALL OF THE SNOWMAN

Here is a thought of little worth

Snowmen start their fall to earth

From Heaven above unassembled

And like a snow globe it resembled

But if a snowman were then desired

some assembly would be required

DARK DAYS OF WINTER

Stinging sleet on north winds blow

Biting wind brings driving snow

Freezing fog with bitter chill

Frost and ice over vale and hill

Long cold nights and short dark days

These are winters unfriendly ways

WINTER WHITE

Snow falling softly - silently

Covered landscapes - evenly

Turning darkness into light

Shrouded in clinical white

Days of blue sky’s bright

Clear frost filled night

A SOFT BLANKET OF WHITE

A picturesque valley scene

Like a fairyland of pure delight

Viewed through a window

To avoid the winter’s bite

SILENT POOL

The amorous King John
Took by ungentlemanly force
The woodcutter’s daughter
And put her upon his horse
Taking her from Albury village
To a place called the silent pool
The girl, scared and crying
Prayed his ardour would cool
But he pressed his intent upon her
So into the dark lake she fled
Mounted, he drove her ever deeper
Until the poor girl was dead
Now on the silent pool at midnight
The maiden can be seen there
Where the amorous King John
Did drown the life from her

WINTER MAGIC

Under the star filled winter sky

Moonlight illuminates the vale

Magically glinting on Icicles

And the crystals of icy rime

BATHED IN SUMMER SUNSHINE

Bathed in summer sunshine Gentle breezes stir the stems But above in the golden sun Grow an array of perfect gems
